Wiper inserts for turning

Wiper inserts for turning

The commonly noted key advantages for wiper turning inserts are:

1) Doubling of feed per revolution while still achieving the same surface finish as with a standard radius turning insert. This means a doubling of productivity for the operation. It can also translate into longer tool life for a finishing insert because the in-cut time per component is reduced by 50 percent.

2) By substituting a wiper insert instead of a standard radius geometry insert and keeping the same feed per revolution, the surface finish produced will be two times better. For example, instead of a 64 RMS, the workpiece will have a 32 RMS. In some cases this can mean a subsequent grinding operation can be eliminated.

Opening a CATIA V4 model file in UGS NX

Opening a CATIA V4 model file in UGS NX

UGS NX 1 has a free beta (no support if it doesn't work) translator to import/export CATIA v4 model files into UG. (If it is a CATIA v5 .catpart, save it as a .model from v5.) The operation works for solids and surfaces only.Opening a CATIA V4 .model in UG NX 1 (Import)1. Select File Open, the Open Part File dialog displays.2. Type a * or *.model in the File name text box to display all the files in the list area.3. Pick the .model file from the list area.4. Click OK to display the warning. Click OK in the warning dialog to begin the import.Saving a Unigraphics file as a CATIA v4 .model (Export)1. Select File Save As to display the dialog.2. Type the name to export to in the File name text box with the .model extension.3. Click OK to display the warning.4. Click OK in the warning dialog to begin the export.Remember that this is a free beta capability in NX 1. We have had mixed success using it. It is possible to purchase the released UG/CATIA 4 translator for Unigraphics NX 2, (which is supported).

Find the load, then size the bolts

Find the load, then size the bolts

Dearth suggests this problem as an example of using FEA to determine reactions at bolts. "I recommend working through a few sample or warm-up problems with textbook solutions before tackling the real one. This problem simulates a 300-lb load on a bracket and tube. The task is to estimate reactions at the four mounting locations so bolts can be sized for them. This problem contains features of real-life engineering challenges and can be solved with pencil and paper using conventional static analysis — summing the forces of a free body diagram. A second task estimates reactions at the bolt locations using FEA. Then compare results," he says.

SAE launches automotive CAD certification

SAE launches automotive CAD certification

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has created the auto industry's first CAD Certification program. This international program provides a standard for developing and measuring automotive CAD skills. Candidates must solve realistic automotive engineering problems using the latest design technology to earn certification.

FEA load and constraints

FEA load and constraints

Loads for most FEA problems are just good guesses. Here's how to stop relying on guessing.

This solution combines large-scale motion and stress analysis. It uses nonlinear time-dependent FEA to account for changes in the model's inertia, shape, and material behavior as it moves or is struck. There is no need to calculate or approximate loads because the forces and moments are balanced according to Newton's laws of motion.

Automakers trade 'mules' for computers

Kevin Power speaks about virtual design software at the Ford Product Development Center in Dearborn.

The advanced computer design brings cars to market faster and cheaper.

When we say 'zero-prototype,' it's more of a visionary statement than a reality," Martens said.

watch out design trend.... It's hot competition!!!

The Genesis of a Laser Scanner

The Genesis of a Laser Scanner

Dr. Bernd Becker, CEO of iQvolution, came to the laser scanner business after 23 years working in factory and process simulation. Looking at his customer base and talking to companies, he realized customers
particularly automotive companies
- wanted a faster way to bring reality to computers.
So, after selling their simulation business to Tecnomatix (which was just last year bought by UGS), he and his brother Reinhard made a big gamble. In 1999, Audi wanted to capture a whole factory in 3D. They had been given a price of $40 million for the job, so Dr. Becker told them his new company would do it for $6.6 million. iQvolution started with a third of the site, then scanned the entire A4 assembly plant.
